Introduction

The electronic display of information is currently a multi-billion dollar industry. In 1995 approximately $10 billion was spend on flat panel displays, and it is estimated that by the year 2000 this industry will grow to $22 billion. Display technology includes field-emission displays (FED), plasma display panels (PDP), solid state displays (SSD), liquid crystal displays (LCD) and cathode ray tubes (CRT). Each device type has its own merits and demerits, and is most effectively used in particular environments.
